Cry out to Jesus!

Mark 10:46-52

Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, a son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have pity and mercy on me [now]!

48 And many severely censured and reproved him, telling him to keep still, but he kept on shouting out all the more, You Son of David, have pity and mercy on me [now]!

49 And Jesus stopped and said, Call him. And they called the blind man, telling him, Take courage! Get up! He is calling you.

50 And throwing off his outer garment, he leaped up and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus said to him, What do you want Me to do for you? And the blind man said to Him, Master, let me receive my sight.

52 And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has healed you. And at once he received his sight and accompanied Jesus on the road.

{52} your faith has healed you.Lit. “saved you”Bartimaeus’ physical and spiritual eyes were likely opened at the same time. The outward healing reflected the inward wellness of salvation.I wonder whether Bartimaeus,a blind man, would have been healed by Jesus if he had simply sat in silence while Jesus walked by. Would Jesus have stopped and turned toward him and touched him? Perhaps. But there were alot of blind people around during Jesus’ earthly ministry. There were alot of deaf people. There were alot of people with leprosy. There were alot of people with all kinds of psysical problems.

But Jesus didn’t heal all of those people did he? In fact we usually find in Scripture that Jesus responded to the people who called out to Him.In the case of Bartimaeus, he cried out,and his voice was heard. It probably helped that he screamed. WE DO NOT NEED TO SCREAM IN OUR PRAYERS , BUT WE DO NEED TO BE PERSISTANT!

What is your need today? Do you need a touch in your body, like Bartimaeus did? Then call out to Jesus! Do you have a child that needs to be healed? Do you have a marriage that needs help? Are you struggling with attacks of the enemy? Maybe addiction? Then cry out to Jesus!

Matt 7:7-8

8 For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened.

When Jesus stopped to restore Bartimaeus’ sight , He was on His way to the cross. He was on his way to die for the sins of the world- yours and mine! 13For everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord [invoking Him as Lord] will be saved

Romans 10:13

Deuteronomy 30:19

I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live

Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you.

Here is what we were doing in July:

On the 6th the young people (The Crossing) from Cornerstone came to our outreach; they are such a joy; and all the homeless really enjoy talking to them.

Destination Gypsy, one of our homeless men, relocated to California. If you go to the internet and type in his name you will see that he was a very famous singer who trusted the wrong people and got himself into trouble, which led to homelessness. While he was here in Vegas he said the salvation prayer with me and vowed to change his life and follow Jesus. He is now changing his song lyrics to Christian and has a publisher interested in his autobiography. He keeps us posted on what he is doing; please pray for him!

A beautiful hands free headset was donated to us by Steve Likourinou, who owns Lime Lite; a company that designs clubs and provides audio and lighting to the DJ industry. Thank you Steve!!!

The Las Vegas 51’s again gave us free tickets to the baseball game on July 25th. Everyone had a wonderful time; several of the homeless had never been to a ball game before; please see the picture attached.

Many of our homeless population are going to church with us and to our various bible studies on a regular basis. This is very encouraging and several are talking about being baptized when Hope holds baptisms toward the end of this month.

We want to thank all of our regular volunteers; they are great!!! We have several new volunteers that have joined us these past few months. Also thanks to those who are partnering with Broken Chains; this is truly a blessing to our ministry! And we want to thank all of our corporate sponsors who donate food, clothing and other items for our homeless population. We could not do what we do, without you all!!!

Please come and join us any Wednesday night at 5:30pm at Myron Levitt Park at Sahara & Eastern.

REQUEST: Broken Chains is growing at a very rapid pace and God is opening doors to all sorts of areas that we want to grow in (housing, counseling, vehicles, jobs, etc.); our problem being that many of the things in the future require money. We are asking that you prayerfully consider becoming a monthly partner with our ministry; large or small donations are welcome and appreciated. We both tithe 10% of all our personal income, monthly, to Broken Chains.

Many things have to be budgeted for and planned for and if we know approximately how much money we have coming in we are better able to plan future projects. We are also applying for grants and grantors are very concerned with the financial status and stability of those that they give grants to.

MINISTRY NEEDS: Our food pantry is almost completely depleted. If you can help in this area just let us know and we will pick up from you or at church or the church office!

We need the following:

Canned peaches

Canned corn and green beans

Pop-top cans of pork & beans, ravioli, tuna, Vienna sausage

Small boxes of raisins

Jam/jelly in plastic containers

Peanut butter in plastic containers

Regular crackers & Ritz crackers

Rice

Beef jerky

Water.

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This word justified occurs 30 times in the book of Romans. It has it’s origins in the greek word that means “righteous” and means “to declare righteous”. This includes: pardon from guilt and the penalty of sin. God declares a sinner righteous solely on the work and merits of Christ’s righteousness. God imputed a believers sin to Christ’s account in His sacrificial death on the cross. The sinner receives this gift of God’s Grace by faith alone.

Sanctification: the work of God by which He makes righteous those whom He has already justified, is distinct from justification, but without exception always follows it. A GIFT BY HIS GRACE. Justification is a gracious gift God extends to the repentant, believing, sinner, wholly apart from human merit or work.

Redemption: The imagery behind this Greek word comes from the ancient slave market. It meant paying the necessary ransom to obtain the slaves release. The only adequate payment to redeem sinners from sin’s slavery and it’s deserved punishment was “In Christ Jesus”, and was paid to God to satisfy His justice.

1st Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.

1st Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished
and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Romans 3:22-24 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; or there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as
a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
There is no distinction……glory of God. A parenthetical comment explaining that God can bestow His righteousness on ALL who believe, Jew or Gentile, because all people – without distinction-fail miserably to live up to the divine standard.

Romans 5:2-5 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Obtained our introduction- This referes to a believers access to God through Jesus Christ, what was unthinkable to the OT Jew is now available to ALL who come.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need

Stand-This refers to the permanent, secure position we enjoy in Christ.

Phil 1-6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus

John 17:22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;

Hope of the glory of God-Unlike the English word “hope”, the New Testament word contains no uncertainty; it speaks of something that is certain, but not yet realized. The believers ultimate destiny is to share in the very Glory of God.

Grace- God giving us what we don’t deserve.
Mercy- God NOT giving us what we do deserve.

Proverbs 3:1-6
Amplified Bible (AMP)

1 MY SON, forget not my law or teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;

2 For length of days and years of a life [worth living] and tranquility [inward and outward and continuing through old age till death], these shall they add to you.

3 Let not mercy and kindness [shutting out all hatred and selfishness] and truth [shutting out all deliberate hypocrisy or falsehood] forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart.(A)

4 So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man.(B)

5 Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

6 In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

7 Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil.(C)

A Compass for Life’s Journey

Proverbs 3:1-6

If you’ve ever been lost in the woods, you know the concerns, confusion, and panic this situation causes. Now think what a difference it would have made to know that a compass was in your pocket. Spiritually speaking, we have such a compass—God’s Word. But it does no good unless we let it guide us. Yet at times, we may fail to follow its direction because of . . .

Neglect. Sometimes we are so busy walking through life that we forget to look at God’s compass to make sure we’re headed in the right direction.

Pride. Oftentimes we want to determine the destiny ourselves. Relying on our own strength, understanding, and abilities, we plan our own route.

Distractions. God’s path of obedience isn’t always easy. In fact, sometimes it can be extremely challenging. Satan offers other trails that promise pleasure and ease if we will just ignore the compass and follow him. Although these trails seem pleasant at first, they lead to heartbreak and discouragement.

Difficulties. Whenever obstacles appear on the trail, our natural tendency is to try and find a way around them. But by ignoring God’s compass and stepping off the path, we’ll miss the blessings He wants to give us through the rough patches—strong faith and godly character.

Why should we wander when the Lord’s compass is available? Let Scripture be your guide on life’s journey. God promises to give you productive days and fruitful years if you follow His path. He’ll direct each step of your way, and His peace will sustain you, even during the difficult times.

Spiritual Wimps

One of the things that makes us cave in to temptation so early is that we often have the sense that we are going to fail anyway, so why even put up a struggle? But are we so sure of this? Didn’t the problem of last year or last month strike us with the same despair? And yet with God it was possible. Spiritual growth seems so impossible in the moment, and so easy in retrospect. We need to remember how unlikely it seemed we would ever: profess Christ, pray in public, witness, and all of the other steps along the way, as we face the temptation to give up now. After all, this too will pass. We can, and will make it by the grace of God. And God has given us His word…

1 Cor 10:13 (TEB) Every temptation that has come your way is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist; at the time you are tempted he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.

On Guard

Gal 6:1 (Phi) Even if a man is detected in some sin, my brothers, the spiritual ones among you should quietly set him back on the right path, not with any feeling of superiority but being yourselves on guard against temptation.

Prov 16:18 (NIV) Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Don’t Place Yourselves In Dangerous Territory Unless God Is With You!

1 Cor 7:5 (Phi) [To married] Do not cheat each other of normal sexual intercourse… or you will expose yourselves to the obvious temptation of Satan.

Eph 4:26b-27 (NIV) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

1 Tim 6:9 (NIV) People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.

You Are Not Alone

1 Pet 5:8-10 (Phi) Be self-controlled and vigilant always, for your enemy the devil is always about, prowling like a lion roaring for its prey. Resist him, standing firm in your faith, remembering that the strain is the same for all your fellow-Christians in other parts of the world. And after you have born these sufferings a very little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to share his eternal splendor through Christ, will himself make you whole and secure and strong.

Attacks Of Satan

Dan 6:16-17 (NIV) So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!” A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed.

Oswald Chambers: “We have the idea that we ought to shield ourselves from some of the things God brings round about us. Never! God engineers circumstances and whatever they may be like we have to see that we face them while abiding continually with Him… They are… temptations to the life of the Son of God in us. The honor of Jesus Christ is at stake in your bodily life.”

Dan 6:19-22 (NIV) At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” Daniel answered, “…My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight…”

Dan 6:23-24 (NIV) The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

Ps 23:5 (NIV) You prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies…

The Secret Weapon

How would a cadaver respond to this temptation? “Reckon yourself dead…” to every instinct, impulse, and desire of the flesh. This is the violence of the war of the kingdom of God (Mat 11:12). This is the cross we bear that leads to victory. This is “the way of the Lord”.

Rom 6:11-13 (Wey) … You must regard yourselves as dead in relation to sin, but as alive in relation to God, because you are in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign as king in your mortal bodies, causing you to be in subjection to their cravings; and no longer lend your faculties as unrighteous weapons for sin to use. On the contrary surrender your very selves to God as living men who have risen from the dead, and surrender your various faculties to God, to be used as weapons to maintain the right.

Luke 9:23 (NIV) Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

2 Cor 4:10 (NIV) We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

Rom 8:13 (NAS) … If by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, then you will live.

Can’t Touch This…

1 Jn 5:18 (Phi) We know that the true child of God does not sin, he is in the charge of God’s own Son and the evil one cannot touch him.

Gal 5:16-17 (Jer) Let me put it like this: if you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence, since self-indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally against such a thing…

James 4:7 (NIV) Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

The Day Is Coming

Eph 6:10,13 (Phi) In conclusion be strong—not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of his boundless strength. Put on God’s complete armor so that you can successfully resist all the devil’s craftiness… that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground.

2 Tim 4:18 (NIV) The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack…

Mat 6:13 (NIV) “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

A temptation is an act that looks appealing to an individual. It is usually used to describe acts with negative connotations and as such, tends to lead a person to regret such actions, for various reasons:

Legal

Social

Psychological (including feeling guilt)

Health

Economic

Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiosity, desire, or fear of loss.

Oswald Chambers: “Until we are born again, [this is] the only temptation we understand. But by regeneration we are lifted into another realm where we face the kind of temptations Our Lord faced… Satan does not tempt us to do wrong things, he tempts us in order to make us lose… the possibility of being of value to God… Temptation is a suggested short-cut to the realization of the highest at which I aim—not at what I understand as evil, but towards what I understand as good… [At this point Satan] does not come along the line of tempting us to sin, but on the line of shifting the point of view, and only the Spirit of God can reveal this as a temptation of the devil.”

Do Not Defend Yourself

Mat 5:25-26 (NIV) “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”

1 Tim 1:15-16 (NIV) Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

The Flesh Is Weak

1 Thes 3:5 (NIV) For this reason… I [Paul] sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.

2 Cor 2:11 (NIV) …in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. Oswald Chambers: “A man’s disposition on the inside, i.e., what he possesses in his personality, determines what he is tempted by on the outside. The temptation fits the nature of the one tempted, and reveals the possibilities of that nature. Every man has the setting of this own temptation, and the temptation will come along the line of the ruling disposition. Temptation yielded to… is a proof that it was timidity that prevented the sin before.”

1 Jn 5:18 (NIV) We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one does not touch him.

James 1:13-14 (NIV) When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desires, he is dragged away and enticed. The Tempter, And The One Who Beat Him

Mat 4:1 (NIV) Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

Heb 2:18 (Phi) By virtue of his own suffering under temptation he is able to help those who are exposed to temptation.

C.S. Lewis: “No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because he was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means—the only complete realist.”

Our High Priest, Our Defense Attorney Against The Accuser

Heb 4:15-16 (Phi) For ours is no High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses—he himself has shared fully in all our experience of temptation, except that he never sinned. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with fullest confidence, that we may receive mercy for our failures and grace to help in the hour of need.

Fight The Good Fight

Heb 12:4 (NIV) In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood… In fact, most of us have not even made an honest attempt at resisting temptation. We cave in immediately without much of a fight. “Well, I’ll quit doing that next week. Why struggle now when I know I am going to do it again anyway? It is just a matter of time, and now is as good a time as any.” But temptation feeds on weakness and bent desires. We need to start struggling to see what holiness is all about, to see if we will like it in eternity with God. We will also see just how strong we are and what we are made of.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines “worldview” as the overall perspective from which one see’s and interprets the world. But perspective can be an elusive word. Often times a person’s perspective is influenced by their perception of a situation-and perception is influenced by how clearly we see and understand all of the factors facing us. Truth and reality therefore become key components in determining perspective.

Wouldn’t it be great to know that the decisions you are making daily are based on real truth? That the perspective you hold on to is grounded in reality? But what, in today world, can be relied upon as a source of truth? Our friends, family, the media, history, the internet? In order to ascertain truth for our lives, we must begin by committing ourselves to something that can be relied upon for providing a foundation of truth. Only the Bible can be trusted to provide us with real truth. Thus we end up with a “Biblical Worldview”, a perspective that is based on the Bible- on God’s truth!

A Biblical worldview is grounded in a commitment of knowing and understanding the Bible. It is a commitment to ascertaining truth for our lives and applying that truth to everyday situations we encounter.

Have you ever found yourself wondering what truth really is?

How can you separate fact from fiction?

What is really going on?

Who can I believe?

Every day we make choices that become building blocks to our future. As we wrestle through the decision making process we assume the decisions we make are based on the facts in front of us. However, we often arrive at our conclusions in the midst of an environment that is filled with smoke and mirrors. It is a world filled with illusions, scams, and deception. And yet with the passing of time, the future always reveals the source of our reasoning. The deceptions are exposed,
the truth prevails, and we live with the consequences of our good or bad decisions.

Wouldn’t it be great to know that our decision making is based on truth? In order to ascertain truth for our lives, we must begin by committing ourselves to learning God’s truth in His word and then applying it to everyday situations we encounter.

Eph 4:17-21

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.

18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned

21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

1st Peter 1:14-15

14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Rom 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

James 1;22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Matt 13:18-23

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:

19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.

23 But the seed falling on John 14:66 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 8:31-32

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Luke 11:34-36

34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[ your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.

35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.

36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Psalm 25:5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalm 26:3 for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.

John 3:20-21

20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
